Q: What kind of pools do you design and install?
A: We are specialist designers and installers of reinforced concrete luxury swimming pools with tiled finish. As far as pool shell is concerned, we specify the use of sprayed gunite or shotcrete, but can advice on various alternative construction methods should the need arise. On the mechanical services side, we do undertake filtration, heating and ventilation design for any type of indoor or outdoor pool.
Q: Who are your main customers?
A: We design and install swimming pools for homeowners, architects, builders, main contractors and property developers. Technology Swimming Pools specialises, in particular, in the mechanical services to serve indoor and outdoor pools and spas. We can as such advise at a very early stage on the special requirements for the pool, pool plant and the environmental control and heat recovery systems essential for indoor pools.
Q: What is included in your scope of work?
A: We start with preparing initial design drawings that include the pool designs, layout, concrete drawings, plumbing plan and ducting drawings etc. The ground works, concrete and tiling are usually done by the main contractor. We come in periodically to place the pool fittings, plumbing, filtration, heating and electrics. The pool is than filled up, heated to required temperature and water balanced before handing over. We provide detailed manuals complete with as installed drawings for customers reference and records.
Q: How much is a custom swimming pool?
A: Because every swimming pool we do is unique and specially designed for a particular customer keeping his or her needs in consideration, it is almost impossible to provide a price list. But guide prices are given on our prices page and the initial consultation is free.
Q: Why do I get my swimming pool designed by a pool specialist?
A: When you decide to build or renovate your home, do you go to a building materials supplier, a hardware store or an electrical goods supplier? Or do you contact bricklayers, plumbers or electricians? No, but you go to an architect or a specialist interior designer. So it makes little sense in approaching a general contractor or landscaper for designing and building a swimming pool.
Q: How do outdoor swimming pools lose heat?
A: Outdoor swimming pools lose heat in a variety of ways, but evaporation is by far the largest source of energy loss for swimming pools. The reason evaporation has such an impact is that evaporating water requires tremendous amounts of energy. It only takes 1 BTU to raise 1 pound of water 1 degree Fahrenheit, but each pound of 80ºF water that evaporates takes away a staggering 1048 Btu’s of heat out of the pool. Covering your pool when it’s not in use is the single most effective way of reducing pool-heating costs.
Q: What is so special about indoor swimming pool design?
A: As the air temperature drops, it becomes saturated and the moisture begins to condense on any adjacent surface below a certain temperature (Dew Point). Indoor swimming pool schemes are often designed with a room temperature of 30 degrees C and a relative humidity of 60%. These conditions have an associated dew point of about 22ºC. The design basic for indoor swimming pools is to ensure that no surface in the pool hall cools to below dew point causing the moisture to condense. Air distribution also plays a key role in this and the objective is to completely blanket the area with warm dry air supplied by the dehumidifier, thereby increasing the surface temperature to above dew point. This requires competent knowledge of air handling, heating & ventilation as well as swimming pool construction.
Q: How big, and how deep should I make my pool?
A: A typical residential swimming pool is 3m to 5m (10′ to 16′) wide and 6m to 12m long (20′ to 40′). Depth is kept at between 1.2m and 1.8m (4′ and 6′). But it also depends on the intended use, budget, location, planning consent etc.
Q: Am I limited to swimming pool designs shown on your website?
A: In a word, no. You are not limited to the designs or shapes we show on our site. Our design engineers can produce a set of plans even from a sketch or photograph. Almost any pool shape can be sized and designed to fit your property, or your specifications. The only important consideration is the necessity to cover the pool. In case of outdoor pools, it is mandatory. Indoors, it is optional, as long as you don’t mind the extra running costs of a permanently uncovered pool.
